Intel leads the smartphone and tablet baseband market by shipments in 2020

According to the latest research report released by Strategy Analytics, in 2020, the global smartphone and tablet slim modem (independent baseband processor) market revenue has increased by 72% to reach 5.8 billion U.S. dollars. In 2020, Intel leads the shipment of smart phones and tablet computers slim modems, while Qualcomm leads the revenue share. Samsung LSI ranks third in the smartphone and tablet slim modem market by virtue of its exynos brand 5G slim modem.

Qualcomm has returned strongly, gaining a 56% revenue share in the smartphone and tablet slim modem market in 2020. In 2020, the company's slim modem shipments increased by 377%. Qualcomm's X55 5G slim modem will appear in the iPhone 12 series and many Android flagship devices in 2020. Qualcomm will continue its development momentum in 2021.

In addition to smartphones and tablets, slim modem suppliers are all attracted to the cellular Internet of Things, automobiles, networked personal computers, fixed wireless access, and mobile broadband. Analysts expect Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung to increase their focus on these areas in the next few quarters.

Analysts said that in terms of shipments, Intel is in a leading position in the smart phone and tablet slim modem market. Intel’s shipments dropped by 23% in 2020, because its main customer, Apple, switched to Qualcomm’s 5G slim modem in 2020. The iPhone SE 2020 model and the iPhone 11 series have promoted shipments of Intel slim modems.
