Surplus Global, a supplier of second-hand semiconductor equipment in South Korea, recently stated that the global shortage of chips has caused an explosive growth in the demand for equipment in the chip industry.
According to THE ELEC report, Brian Kim, the company's president, said that Surplus Global's performance growth this year is expected to exceed the average level of the global equipment industry.
According to it, at present, the delivery time of brand-new semiconductor equipment is more than one year on average. With the supply of chips in short supply, fabs are looking for second-hand equipment with relatively fast delivery speeds.
Brian Kim further pointed out that if the demand for new semiconductor equipment has increased by 100% due to chip shortages, the demand for second-hand equipment will increase by as much as 130%.
According to previous media news, a large amount of demand from Chinese fabs is pushing up the price of second-hand semiconductor equipment.
Generally, second-hand equipment has a clear price advantage compared to brand new equipment. However, since global chip shortages have occurred and fabs have built factories to increase production capacity, the price of second-hand equipment has continued to rise. It is reported that the market price of second-hand semiconductor equipment has risen by 20-30% in 2021, and the prices of individual popular and scarce models have doubled in just a few months this year.
