South Korean experts call on the South Korean government to strengthen support for the DRAM industry

Feb 02 79
South Korea has the world's top two memory chip manufacturers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which are important economic lifelines. Experts in the Korean semiconductor industry called on the Korean government to more actively support domestic DRAM players, such as providing tax cuts to allow the DRAM industry to play its role as a "silicon shield."

"BusinessKorea" reported that Hwang Chul-sung, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Seoul National University, pointed out: "DRAM chips are indispensable in the fields of artificial intelligence, fighters, missiles, etc., and the Korean DRAM industry can play the role of a safety shield." It was mentioned: "The United States urges TSMC to set up semiconductor factories in the United States for safety reasons. Many advanced weapons in Western countries use TSMC chips, not to mention the general economic scope."

Ahn Ki-hyun, senior executive director of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA), emphasized: “The United States and China grant a 40% tax deduction for investment in semiconductor facilities, and the European Union has also begun to follow suit and expand investment in the semiconductor industry.” “The Korean government needs to provide at least 50%. % Tax cuts can maintain the competitiveness of South Korea’s semiconductor industry."

According to TrendForce's data, as of the fourth quarter of 2020, Samsung Electronics ranked first in the global DRAM market with a market share of 41%, SK Hynix ranked second with a market share of 29.3%, followed by Micron (Micron) with a market share of 24.3 %.
