Reuters: Samsung spends $17 billion to build a 5nm plant in Texas, USA

Feb 02 69
According to a Reuters report on November 24, Samsung Electronics chose Taylor, Texas as the location of the new plant, which cost $17 billion.

Samsung said in a statement that the plant will create 2,000 high-tech jobs, construction will begin in the first half of next year, and mass production is expected to begin in the second half of 2024. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a press release that it will also create at least 6,500 construction jobs.

Samsung is currently the world's largest memory chip manufacturer and the second-largest semiconductor manufacturer in terms of revenue. It is currently considering setting up factories in Arizona and New York, which will be larger than its current chip factory in Austin, Texas. many.

Samsung said that based on factors such as infrastructure stability, government support, and distance from existing factories, Samsung once again chose Texas.

Texas Senator John Cornyn said that the company's decision to choose Texas proves that the state has low taxes, reasonable supervision, a strong infrastructure and a good economic environment for attracting investment.

Last winter, the state suffered a large-scale blackout for several days, and Samsung’s Austin chip factory suffered about 300-400 billion won ($254-339 million) in losses.

Sources previously told Reuters that Williamson County in Texas (Williamson County, including the city of Taylor) won Samsung’s potential site selection plan, and they provided the best incentive plan to build a factory.

Greg Abbott’s office said on Tuesday that Samsung will also receive a $27 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund to create jobs. His office did not immediately respond to a request for more details about the award Samsung received.

Samsung is working with rivals TSMC and Intel to expand chip foundry manufacturing in the United States. Corning on Tuesday called on the Biden administration to invest more money to attract chip makers to the United States, calling it a "national security priority."

In a statement, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kinam Kim thanked the Biden administration for "creating an environment that supports Samsung, as we are working to expand the leading semiconductor manufacturing industry in the United States. We also thank the government and Congress for their bipartisan support and promptly Develop government incentives for domestic chip production and innovation."

In addition to providing advanced logic chips for mobile devices and self-driving cars, Samsung has not specified the specific product line of the new plant. Analysts said that it may use EUV from ASML in the Netherlands to produce 5nm or more advanced cutting-edge chips for major customers such as Qualcomm. At present, the chip technology of Samsung's Austin plant is 14nm and 28nm. Samsung said the Taylor factory is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Austin and covers an area of more than 5 million square meters.
