Samsung Electronics said it will provide a global automaker with five advanced memory chips for use in its autonomous driving and infotainment systems.

According to a Korean media report from Kedglobal, Samsung Electronics said on Thursday that as the auto industry shifts to fully automated driving, the company has begun to provide the automaker with five automotive chips, including 256GB PCIe Gen 3 NVMe BGA for infotainment systems. SSD, 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 2GB DDR4 DRAM, as well as 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 128GB UFS for autonomous driving systems.

At present, Samsung Electronics has mass-produced these five types of chips, but declined to disclose which car manufacturer they are supplying.

Industry observers said that given the exceptionally high capacity and performance of Samsung's automotive chips, the global automaker may be Tesla.

At the end of September this year, according to multiple industry sources, Samsung will beat TSMC and will produce the next-generation autopilot chip HW 4.0 for Tesla. It will begin mass production at the Hwaseong plant in South Korea using 7nm technology as early as the fourth quarter of this year.

HW 4.0 is the successor to the HW 3.0 chip currently used in Tesla's vehicles, and the HW 3.0 chip is manufactured by Samsung. It is widely expected that this HW 4.0 computer will be installed on Tesla Cybertruck.
