SEMI: Global Semiconductor Equipment Sales Breaks US$100 Billion for the First Time in 2021, Mainland China Becomes the Largest Market

Feb 02 76
The SEMI year-end report shows that in 2021, the total sales of global semiconductor manufacturing equipment will exceed the US$100 billion mark for the first time, reaching US$103 billion, a 44.7% increase from the previous industry record of US$71 billion (2020). It is expected to increase to next year. 114 billion U.S. dollars.

According to PRNewswire, SEMI announced its year-end semiconductor equipment forecast-OEM outlook at the 2021 Japanese Semiconductor Exhibition held by it. SEMI President and CEO Ajit Manocha said that this data reflects the global semiconductor industry's efforts to meet strong demand. Extraordinary efforts to continuously expand production capacity.

From a regional perspective, China, South Korea and Taiwan are expected to remain the top three destinations for equipment spending in 2021. It is expected that mainland China will regain the championship after taking the first place in 2020, while Taiwan is expected to regain the top spot in 2022 and 2023. Equipment spending in all regions tracked is expected to increase in 2021 and 2022.

From the perspective of each link, wafer manufacturing equipment, including wafer processing, wafer facilities and mask/mask equipment, is expected to grow by 43.8% in 2021 to reach a new record of US$88 billion, and then continue to increase to 2022 About 99 billion U.S. dollars. The forecast for 2023 will be slightly reduced by -0.5% to USD 98.4 billion.

Among them, driven by the demand for advanced and mature process nodes, the foundry and logic parts, which account for more than half of the total sales of fab equipment, will increase by 50% year-on-year in 2021 to reach 49.3 billion US dollars. This growth momentum is expected to continue in 2022, and investment in foundry and logic equipment will increase by 17%.

In terms of DRAM and NAND devices, strong demand for memory by businesses and consumers has driven growth. DRAM equipment dominates the expansion in 2021, increasing by 52% to 15.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 and 1% to 15.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. NAND equipment will grow by 24% to 19.2 billion US dollars in 2021, and 8% to 20.6 billion US dollars in 2022. It is estimated that by 2023, DRAM and NAND equipment expenditures will be reduced by -2% and -3%, respectively.

In terms of packaging and testing equipment, after achieving a strong growth of 33.8% in 2020, it is expected to surge by 81.7% to US$7 billion in 2021, and then, driven by advanced packaging, will increase again by 4.4% in 2022. The semiconductor test equipment market is expected to grow by 29.6% to 7.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 and continue to grow by 4.9% in 2022 to meet the needs of 5G and HPC applications.
