According to reports, after a food poisoning incident occurred at Foxconn's Indian factory this month, Apple confirmed that the factory involved was included on the supplier watch list.
Although Apple did not clearly say what it means to "observe", after Wistron's Indian factory last year caused a large-scale destruction of wages due to arrears of wages, Apple also included the factory on the watch list and stated that the supplier will improve the treatment of workers. No new orders will be allocated before.
Last week, more than 250 female workers at the Foxconn iPhone factory in India were taken to the hospital due to food poisoning, which triggered a protest. This incident aroused local concern about the living conditions of workers in factory dormitories in Chennai (the capital of Tamil Nadu).
The local government requires Foxconn to review the services provided to workers, including dormitory backup power, food and water. The Bureau of Industrial Safety and Health also recommends the provision of entertainment facilities such as TVs, libraries and indoor games. Foxconn has admitted to Indian officials that it has “increased production too fast” and will gradually ensure that workers’ living facilities are upgraded before they resume full capacity.
Hon Hai said today that the company has recently launched a special investigation team for staff facilities in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, India, and found that some dormitories outside the factory do not meet the standards required by the group. The company apologizes for the situation encountered by our employees, and has immediately taken corresponding measures to improve the equipment and services we provide in the dormitory. At the same time, the group has also adjusted the local operating team and management system to ensure that the high operating standards can be achieved and maintained.
In addition, Hon Hai emphasized that this incident has no significant impact on the company's finances and business. Before the operation restarts, during the period of improvement of the dormitory environment, employees' salaries will continue to be paid, and the company will continue to work hard for employees to return to work in the future.
