Foreign media "techpowerup" reported that although memory giant Micron (October 2021) sold its Utah fab to Texas Instruments, it looks like Micron intends to build a new and more technologically advanced fab. According to recent market rumors, Micron's new fab will be selected near Austin, Texas, where there are also electric car manufacturers Tesla Gigafactory and Samsung fab.
Micron has two factories in Virginia, USA, one in Idaho, four in Singapore, one in Taiwan, and one each in China and Japan. Sources said Micron had been planning to build a new fab in North Carolina, but the plan was not executed.
Micron announced in 2021 that it will invest about $150 million to expand and improve fab capacity, possibly building more factories. In addition to Texas, California, Arizona, etc. are also under consideration, but it is unclear when Micron will make a final decision.
The new fab capacity planning, foreign media only know that the new factory will probably mainly produce DRAM memory or NAND Flash flash memory, which needs to be determined according to market demand. Micron’s selection of sites not only considers local construction costs, but also includes local infrastructure construction and government regulatory support.
Micron will build a new fab, and Texas may be favored
