On June 17, according to Taiwanese media "Economic Daily", Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong has secured "additional" extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment after visiting ASML in the Netherlands.
According to the report, the industry believes that ASML is the only manufacturer of high-end chip process equipment in the world, and the stable supply of EUV equipment is the key for Samsung to overtake TSMC and grab the global foundry leader.
According to Korean media Business Korea, Samsung said on the 15th that when Lee Jae-yong visited ASML’s headquarters in the Netherlands on the 14th, he met with ASML CEO Peter Wennink and other executives to extensively discuss the future of semiconductor technology, market prospects and the supply of EUV equipment. And get "extra" EUV lithography equipment.
The industry previously reported that ASML's annual shipment of EUV equipment was 48 units last year, of which 15 units were won by Samsung and 20 units were arranged by TSMC.
According to the report, ASML's EUV lithography machine shipments this year are estimated to be 51 units, of which Samsung has reserved 18 units and TSMC has secured at least 22 units.
According to Korean media reports, if Samsung can win more EUV machines this time, it will get at least 18 this year, but Samsung did not elaborate on the content of the "extra" EUV equipment obtained this time.
Samsung began to cooperate with ASML in semiconductor process and equipment development in the 2000s. In 2012, Samsung invested in ASML to strengthen the partnership between the two parties.
It is rumored that Samsung has grabbed ASML's "extra" EUV lithography machine, and at least 18 will be obtained this year
