The United States and Japan will issue a joint statement on 2nm chip research and development this Friday

Feb 02 106
According to Nikkei Asia, the joint development of a 2-nanometer chip R&D center between Japan and the United States has been officially put on the agenda.

A Japanese chip research institute will debut this year that will draw on equipment and talent from the U.S. semiconductor technology center.

The 2-nanometer chips that the two parties plan to study have superior performance while lowering power consumption. The R&D center will include a prototype production line, with the goal of starting domestic mass production as early as 2025.

It will be included in the first "two plus two" economic and diplomatic summit between the United States and Japan in Washington on Friday, after which a joint statement on 2nm-related bilateral supply chain cooperation will be issued.

Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Koichi Hagiuda and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo formulated a chip cooperation plan in May this year, and the two sides have since finalized the details based on discussions at that month's summit.

The Japan Institute of Industrial Technology, the Institute of Physics and Chemistry, and the University of Tokyo will participate in the project.
