Nikkei Chinese website reported today (5) that TSMC recently announced that it will set up a research and development base in Osaka this year. This is the second base of TSMC Design Technology Japan, which is responsible for R&D in Japan, and will be responsible for technology development and customer support. TSMC made the announcement on September 2 at a technical briefing held in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Kevin Zhang, senior vice president in charge of business strategy, said that more investment will be made in order to flexibly utilize talented people in Japan.
Zhang Xiaoqiang, senior vice president of business development, said that TSMC has customers in very important professional fields such as CMOS image sensors and automotive semiconductors. Under the bridge of R&D bases, TSMC and the Japanese industry will cooperate more closely.
Makoto Onodera, general manager of TSMC's Japanese subsidiary, said that TSMC's sales growth in the Japanese market is not inferior to the overall level of the headquarters. Last year, 12-inch wafer shipments exceeded 1.2 million. In 2021, TSMC's overall shipment scale will be 14.17 million units.
Japanese media EE Times Japan reported that TSMC’s acting spokesperson and public relations director Gao Menghua said that TSMC Design Technology Japan was established in January 2020, and then a subsidiary of Japan’s 3DIC R&D Center was established in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture in March 2021. In December of the same year Established JASM (Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing), and established three new companies in Japan within two years. Currently, an office is being established in Osaka. It is expected to start operations in the second half of this year.
