According to the British "Daily Telegraph" report, if Nexperia's acquisition of the Welsh chipmaker is blocked, an investment fund that has been established will launch a rescue operation for Newport Wafer Fab (Newport Wafer Fab, referred to as NWF).
The fund is called Headlight Technology Partners Ltd. The fund is reportedly in talks to raise 500 million pounds (about 590 million euros or $590 million) for a number of investments. The fund is also in touch with Ron Black, owner of chip design firm Codasip GmbH and former CEO of Imagination Technology.
Black is understood to have £300m in funding and has said he is interested in backing the NWF if its sale to Anshi is outlawed.
Headlight was established in July 2022 by Alex Stewart, Henant Mardia, chairman of BluWireless Ltd., and David Wither, CEO of Sofant Technologies Ltd. The report quoted Stewart as saying that the purpose of the fund was to "invigorate" the UK's semiconductor strategy. It added that Headlight will focus on investing in advanced chip technologies and materials such as compound semiconductors, graphene and photonics, including NWF.
