Russia said that its self-developed lithography machine will come out in 2028, which can produce 7nm chips

According to Taiwan media, the Russian Academy of Sciences announced that in 2028, a photolithography machine developed by itself will be available, which can produce 7nm chips.

It is reported that after the international sanctions cut off the supply to Russia, Russian chips were in short supply. In addition, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union also imposed a number of sanctions. Almost all manufacturers with advanced wafers stopped cooperating with Russian entities, and ARM was unable to license their technology to Russian chip designers.

To this end, the Russian government has launched a national plan, hoping to develop a 28nm process by 2030, relying on reverse engineering of foreign chips and training local semiconductor talents.

However, due to international sanctions, US and European semiconductor equipment manufacturers cannot supply Russia. If Russia promotes the 28nm process, it must design and develop domestic equipment. However, companies like ASML and Applied Materials have to spend decades to develop, and the update iteration must be completed in about 8 years.

However, Russia does not seem to be worried at all. The Novgorod Strategy Development of Russia announced that the Institute of Applied Physics under the Russian Academy of Sciences would fall below everyone's expectations and develop a lithography machine capable of producing 7nm chips in 2028, which could also defeat similar products of ASML.

The deputy director of the Nanostructure Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that ASML, the global leader in lithography, has been committed to EUV exposure machines for nearly 20 years, with the goal of keeping the world's top semiconductor manufacturers highly productive. But Russia does not need it, as long as it advances according to its domestic needs.

The report said frankly that Russia's idea seems too naive. It is not feasible for Russia to develop a lithography machine that can support 7-nanometer chips within six years. Moreover, the wafer factory can not produce chips only by lithography machines, but also requires many equipment, which Russia does not produce.
