According to the latest data from the International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI), by 2025, the production capacity of 8-inch silicon wafers dominated by cars and power devices in Chinese Mainland will increase by 20%.
The International Semiconductor Industry Association said in its latest "2025 8-inch Wafer Factory Outlook" report that global semiconductor manufacturers plan to add 13 8-inch wafer production lines to reach a record level of more than 7 million wafers per month. The demand for automobiles and other applications has driven the capacity expansion of power semiconductors and MEMS.
From 2021 to 2025, the wafer factory capacity of automobiles and power semiconductors will grow at a rate of 58%, followed by MEMS, OEM and simulation. The growth rate of their wafer factory capacity will be 21%, 20% and 14% respectively. This is very different from the 12 inch wafer factory for cutting-edge CMOS chips.
By 2025, China's wafer output will increase by 66%, followed by Southeast Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Middle East, and South Korea, with their wafer output increasing by 35%, 11%, 8%, and 2% respectively. In 2022, it is estimated that China's 8-inch production capacity will account for 21% of the world, followed by Taiwan, China and Japan, accounting for 11% and 10% respectively.
Although European wafer factories mainly produce silicon based gallium nitride, silicon carbide and other materials, chip manufacturers including Shanghai Advanced, BYD Semiconductor, China Resources Microelectronics, Fuji Electronics, Infineon, Anshi Semiconductor and Italy France Semiconductor have announced to build new 8-inch wafer factories to meet the growing demand.
