This year, Apple’s new iPhone chip A13 was mass-produced in the second quarter, TSMC once again monopolizes

Feb 02 64
Although chip foundry giant TSMC is likely to remain the exclusive OEM of Apple's latest A-series chips this year, the company has released cautious company performance and overall chip industry outlook.

TSMC will become the exclusive supplier of custom chip A13 for Apple's 2019 iPhone series. According to people familiar with the matter, TSMC will use the 7-nanometer process to mass produce A13 chips in the second quarter of this year, including an enhanced 7-nanometer process using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology.

TSMC CEO Wei Zhejia said at the company investor conference held in January that sales generated by the 7-nanometer process are expected to account for more than 25% of the company's revenue this year. He added that as more applications such as high-performance computing and automotive require advanced chip process technology, the growth of the 7-nanometer chip customer portfolio will be even stronger.

Although optimistic about the sales of 7-nanometer chips, TSMC has given a cautious outlook on the company's overall operating performance, due to the macro factors. TSMC expects that 2019 will be a "deceleration year" for the company and the global chip industry. TSMC predicts that the growth of the chip foundry industry this year will only be the same as last year.
