MediaTek and TSMC jointly announced on the 8th that the industry's first 8K digital TV system single-chip (SoC) MediaTek S900, which is manufactured using TSMC's 12-nanometer FinFET thin-type (12FFC) technology, has entered mass production.
The S900 is MediaTek's first flagship smart TV chip that supports 8K high resolution and high speed edge artificial intelligence (AI) operations. The S900 is designed to help TV manufacturers create highly competitive flagship products, integrate AI voice human-machine interface and image quality enhancement, and support next-generation smart TVs, greatly enhancing user experience.
TSMC pointed out that TSMC's ultra-low-power 12FFC process has a leading edge in reducing chip size and reducing power consumption in the 16th and 14nm technology generations of professional integrated circuit manufacturing services. It is not available for digital TV applications. An important element missing. The 12FFC process achieves the best balance between performance and low power consumption, making it ideal for supporting speech recognition and edge AI computing power for consumer electronics, wearable and IoT devices.
Gao Xuewu, the deputy general manager of MediaTek and the general manager of the manufacturing department, said that TSMC is a long-term strategic partner of MediaTek. Their advanced process technology enables MediaTek to continuously achieve innovative design in the leading industry and meet our stringent requirements for chip solutions. The demand for 8K TVs around the world is growing stronger. We are very pleased to cooperate with TSMC in supporting advanced technologies supporting 8K TV chips to promote the growth and development of the high-end smart TV industry.
Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice president of TSMC Business Development, pointed out that MediaTek is a recognized leader in the field of consumer electronics. It is an honor to have the opportunity to continue the long history of cooperation between the two parties and jointly create the S900's innovative products. In the future, we will continue to expand our ultra-low power technology portfolio to help our customers produce AI-capable SoCs for a richer smart home life.
The S900 integrates the self-developed AI processor to support the diverse AI functions of smart TV, including face recognition and scene detection, to improve image quality by optimizing color saturation, brightness, sharpness, and motion vector compensation. Under the AI buck, MediaTek believes that the S900 can make TV a control center that supports the AioT ecosystem, and through the MediaTek NeuroPilot platform to control the smart devices in the living room, kitchen, and bedroom, providing consumers with an innovative human-computer interaction experience.
