Samsung Electronics decided to dissolve the development project department of CPU Core in Texas, USA, and will adjust the relevant 290 human resources structure by the end of the year.

The more processor cores, the faster the processing speed, so most high-performance computers or smartphones will carry more Core processors.

In the past, Samsung Electronics has continuously invested in the Core and enhanced its design capabilities in order to strengthen the competitiveness of its own AP (Application Processor). In the end, Samsung's self-developed core was applied to the system semiconductor Exynos series, which was installed on its flagship machine and proved its technical ability. It has also become one of Samsung Electronics' representative products.

However, Samsung Electronics resolutely interrupted the past investment. The Korean media "etnews" reported that this is the necessity for Samsung Electronics to strengthen its selection and concentration. In the future, Samsung Electronics will focus its resources on the core NPU and GPU in the era of AI (Artificial Intelligence).

NPU is the most suitable processor for AI deep learning and calculus. Because deep learning calculus needs to process thousands of operations at the same time, NPU is characterized by efficient processing of large-scale parallel operations.

Samsung Electronics has said that it will become the No. 1 ambition of System Semiconductor in 2030. At that time, it plans to expand the number of people in the NPU field to 2,000, almost 10 times more than now.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics joined hands with AMD in June to strengthen cooperation and technical strength in the GPU field. AMD has low-power, high-performance graphics IP (intellectual property assets), and will create a new generation of mobile GPUs with Samsung Electronics in the future.

Samsung Electronics said that in order to focus on the development of next-generation semiconductor technology, Samsung Electronics decided to interrupt CPU development, which is a strategy of choice and concentration.

Although the flagship Galaxy S11 in the first half of next year will maintain the convention of using the Exynos application processor, with the disbandment of the development department, it is difficult to see the CPU Core designed by Samsung Electronics in 2021.
