According to a report released by Strategy Analytics Mobile Component Technology Services, the global smartphone application processor (AP) market fell 2% year-on-year to $4.8 billion in the second quarter of 2019.

According to the Strategy Analytics research report, Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung LSI, HiSilicon and MediaTek accounted for the top five revenue share of the global smartphone application processor (AP) market in the second quarter of 2019. Qualcomm is far ahead with a 40% revenue share, followed by Apple (20%) and Samsung LSI (13%).

Strategy Analytics estimates that smartphone AP shipments supporting artificial intelligence (AI) achieved a 45% year-on-year growth in the second quarter of 2019, with Qualcomm ranking first in the smartphone AI space.

In the second quarter of 2019, smartphones supporting AI accounted for nearly 50% of total smartphone application processor shipments, about 30% higher than the same period last year.

Sravan Kundojjala, deputy director of Strategy Analytics, said: "After two consecutive years of decline in smartphone AP shipments, MediaTek and Unisoc's shipments in the second quarter of 2019 fell again year-on-year. However, both companies showed signs of recovery. ""

Stuart Robinson, executive director of Strategy Analytics Mobile Component Technology Services, added: "Apple, HiSilicon and Samsung LSI Vertical Integration Inc. increased their cumulative market share of smartphone APs to 37% in the second quarter of 2019."

“Despite the challenges of vertical competition, Qualcomm maintains its leading position in the smartphone AP market share, and its flagship product, the Snapdragon 855 application processor, excels. Qualcomm will continue to leverage its strong relationship with Chinese smartphone manufacturers. The Dragon Application Processor brings considerable sales."
