According to a report by the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun on Tuesday, Japan Display Inc., which is under development, is expected to launch fingerprint sensor production for smartphones in 2019. At the same time, in order to reduce the excessive dependence on the LCD panel of the smartphone, JDI also plans to position the fingerprint sensor and OLED panel as the company's new business.
Due to the increasing popularity of mobile payments, information security needs are increasing. In order to meet market demand, JDI will use its existing display technology to produce fingerprint sensors at the Dongpu Plant in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
It is understood that the JDI Dongpu factory produces capacitive fingerprint sensors for smartphones and tablets. Different from the past silicon substrate, the glass substrate used at present is easier to increase the sensing area; in addition, the sensing of the entire finger can be realized at a lower cost. Coupled with the high light transmission of glass, it can also increase the selling point of the product after being combined with the display.
Although JDI's fingerprint sensor has a certain performance on the fingerprint sensor door lock, due to the limited size of this market, JDI has also cooperated with foreign smartphone manufacturers to develop fingerprint identification products for mobile devices.
At the same time, JDI is also looking forward to the OLED panel business. It is expected that in November 2019, JDI will be able to start producing OLED panels used in Apple's Apple Watch, and the current JDI White Mountain Plant (Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan) may also be put into mass production of OLED panels.
On the road of LCD to OLED production, JDI has been faltering, but it is forced to transform and carry out business reconstruction. On the other hand, dependence on Apple is still the norm of JDI. Although JDI is struggling due to Apple's business, if Apple and Taiwan's Wistron complete their direct capital injection, it can be said that JDI may be due to Apple. And "the comeback".
