It is said that Apple will visit GIS in secret, the new iPhone may support ultrasonic fingerprint recognition under the screen

Feb 02 53
On the 4th, according to the Taiwanese media's "Economic Daily" report, Apple intends to introduce the under-screen fingerprint recognition function for the first time next year on the new iPhone. It is said that next week it will send representatives to meet with Taiwan-based touch panel manufacturer GIS. At that time, we will discuss the cooperation of fingerprint recognition under the ultrasonic screen, and finalize the details in terms of production capacity, yield, and price.

However, GIS has not commented on the rumor.

It is reported that GIS previously provided touch-fitting services for the iPhone, but as Apple switched to the iPhone's in-cell touch design (In-cell) and canceled the 3D sensing function, and even replaced face recognition with fingerprint recognition, GIS hurt. Lost iPhone orders, this time, it is expected to return to the iPhone chain through fingerprint recognition under the ultrasound screen, driving the explosion of performance.

In addition, the industry has recently reported that GIS has entered the Mini LED field, and will be responsible for Apple iPad Mini LED module assembly in the future. Insiders pointed out that GIS was originally the main supplier of iPad touch panels, and now it is re-entering Mini LED modules, which will help future revenue and profit.

According to industry sources, Apple started with the iPhone X and replaced fingerprint recognition with face recognition. However, as non-Apple indicator factories such as Samsung and Huawei have introduced under-screen fingerprint recognition, “full-screen phones” have become a big selling point, and Apple has begun to think about re-embracing under-screen fingerprint recognition technology.

The latest news also mentioned that Apple considers GIS as its main partner Hon Hai Group's affiliated company, has a sound financial status, and is a reference designer for Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint recognition, as well as Samsung's flagship machine cooperation experience. Qualified for mass production, so GIS was chosen.

In addition to the news from the industry chain, Apple has also recently submitted patents related to screen fingerprint recognition to the US Patent Office, indicating that Apple is actively deploying related technologies.

Previously, the supply chain stated that after reconciling with Qualcomm, Apple was very interested in the latter's screen fingerprints, and even conducted internal tests. Compared with optical screen fingerprints, Qualcomm's solution is more secure, and it is an ultrasonic screen. Fingerprints have strong penetrability and high resistance to stains. Even the condition of wet and dirty fingers can still be perfectly identified, and it also supports live detection, which greatly improves safety.

Although it's unclear whether next year's new iPhone will adopt a partial or full-screen fingerprint recognition solution, since ultrasonic technology is only applicable to OLED display panels, this means that the new sensor may be limited to high-end iPhone models.
