According to the Pemba News report, the recent International Chip Conference 2019 (Chips 2019) was held in Beijing. Ni Guangnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, looked forward to the prospect of open source chips.
He said: "In the future, RISC-V is likely to develop into one of the world's mainstream CPUs, thereby forming a three-pointed pattern of Intel (Intel), ARM, and RISC-V in the CPU field."
It is reported that "open source" (open source code) is a development model and business model. Open source software represented by Linux has become the mainstream of the current software industry. The RISC-V open source instruction set can be understood as an open source hardware corresponding to open source software.
"In the future, RISC-V is likely to develop into one of the mainstream CPUs in the world." This is related to its open and simple characteristics. In terms of design, the complete significance of RISC-V is that it is completely open source and free of license fees and intellectual property risks. When the RISC-V instruction set was originally designed, its R & D team made it clear that it would pursue simplicity and discard historical burdens. At present, the technical code set is small, supports modularity, and has excellent performance. It can meet the processor requirements of various complexity from microcontrollers to supercomputers, and supports multiple implementations from FPGA, ASIC, and future devices.
In early December, the Zhongguancun Science City Open Source Chip Source Code Innovation Center was established. The center is committed to building a RISC-V chip innovation ecosystem. In the future, it will mainly focus on the creation of RISC-V global standards and the protection of intellectual property rights, and strengthen the voice of Chinese enterprises and research institutions in the global standardization system; build an RISC-V open source platform and community , Reduce the chip design and application development costs and technical thresholds of enterprises, colleges and universities, and entrepreneurs; strengthen the processor core of RISC-V architecture, supporting basic software and chip R & D innovation, and continuously enhance core competitiveness.
At present, the open ecology of RISC-V has made many manufacturers choose to use the RISC-V instruction set to develop next-generation chips. NVIDIA will use the RISC-V instruction set to make peripheral microcontrollers on the next-generation GPUs. RISC-V cores are used in storage computing chips, and more than 1 billion chips using RISC-V are expected to be shipped each year. In addition, Siemens, Samsung, Google, IBM, Tesla, Qualcomm, NXP, Hitachi and other major manufacturers all have layouts on the RISC-V instruction set chip.
In China, chips made with the RISC-V instruction set are also beginning to make their appearance. On July 18, 2019, Zhongke Wuqi showed the AIoT chip and complete solution based on RISC-V. On July 25, XuanTie910 chip produced by Alibaba's semiconductor company Pintou was also a RISC-V processor, which can be used to design and manufacture high-performance end-on-chips, which are used in 5G, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving.
