Intel and Micron sign new 3D XPoint supply agreement

Feb 02 54

According to anandtech report, Intel and Micron have signed a new 3D XPoint memory chip supply agreement. Analysts believe that Intel will now have to pay Micron more than before because it is the only manufacturer of 3D XPoint.

After ending its partnership with Micron's NAND and 3D XPoint, Intel sold a stake in Lehi, Utah. Since Intel has not yet migrated the production of the Optane series products based on 3D XPoint to the Fab 68 factory in Dalian, it must sign a supply agreement with Micron. Under the agreement, Micron Technology Price sells 3D XPoint to Intel for one year. Obviously, Intel's re-signing a new agreement with Micron this time also shows that it is unwilling to give up the Optane series products.

The statement shows that on March 9, Micron and Intel agreed to terminate the product supply agreement between Micron, Intel and Micron Semiconductor Asia (PSA) on April 6, 2012, which took effect on March 6. At the same time that PSA terminated, Micron signed a new agreement with Intel. The two companies did not disclose further details, only that the new agreement changed pricing and rights terms.

Objective Analysis analysts said Intel is losing money on the NVM Solutions Group (NSG) because 3D XPoint has proven to be very unprofitable. It is estimated that Intel lost approximately $ 2 billion in 3D XPoint in 2017 and 2018, and lost $ 1.5 billion in 2019.
