According to BusinessKorea, after six consecutive months of increase, DRAM prices suddenly stopped rising. The report predicts that since the order volume will begin to decrease from the third quarter of this year, its price is expected to fall again.
According to data from market research company DRAMeXchange on June 30, the average fixed transaction price of DDR4 8 Gb DRAM, which was mainly used for PCs in June, was $3.31, which was the same as in May. DRAMeXchange stated that the upward trend from December 2019 to May 2020 has ceased.
DRAMeXchange also said that despite the surge in demand for DRAM in PCs and laptops, the agency expects the price of DRAM to remain unchanged because the demand side is controlling its order volume in the hope that prices will fall in the future.
According to the DRAMeXchange report, DRAM spot prices, which reflect short-term market conditions, have also fallen by more than a quarter, and have fallen by more than 17% during this period. DRAMeXchange therefore expects DRAM prices to decline in the third quarter and estimates that fixed transaction prices for server DRAM will fall by more than 5% from the previous quarter, while fixed transaction prices for PC DRAM will decline by 5%.
Industry experts pointed out that the main reason for the recent slowdown in price growth is the decline in semiconductor demand in North America and Europe. At the same time, however, the prices of 128 Gb NAND MLC flash memory for solid-state drives (SSD) and USB storage devices have remained unchanged for the past four months.
