Affected by the US's escalation of sanctions on Huawei, MediaTek suspends development of 5nm processors

Feb 02 57
Under the shadow of the US's escalated sanctions on Huawei, the fluctuations in the semiconductor industry chain related companies continue to expand.

According to Technews reports, it has been reported in the market recently that the 5nm process processors that MediaTek is expected to provide to Huawei in 2021 have been discontinued, waiting for the future market conditions to decide the follow-up.

The source pointed out that the 5-nanometer process processor that MediaTek expected to provide to Huawei's Mate series flagship smartphones may be the Dimensity 2000 series. After it was confirmed that it could not continue to supply Huawei, MediaTek also stopped related development.

It is understood that because of this 5nm process processor, the original customer is Huawei. When it is not available at this stage, no other customers will purchase it, so the development has to be temporarily stopped.

In this regard, MediaTek said that MediaTek occupies a good position in the global 5G market and will continue to launch a complete product line in the future, but does not comment on market rumors.

Earlier, it was reported that in order to diversify the risk of concentrated performance on mobile phones, MediaTek internally confirmed that it will accept the commissioned development plan for AMD PC/NB chipsets. With MediaTek’s IC design capabilities and AMD 5G, AMD should have a relationship with MediaTek in the future. More cooperation plans.

At present, among the 5G mobile phone processors that MediaTek has launched, the Dimensity 1000 Plus is designed for flagship smartphones and manufactured using a 7nm process. MediaTek's next-generation 5G flagship smartphone processor is expected to be launched in the second quarter of next year, and it may use 5nm technology.
