According to a businesskorea report, SK Hynix today (22) announced its investment in Gauss Labs, aiming to lead semiconductor manufacturing innovation through industrial artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
The report pointed out that after Gauss Labs established its headquarters in Silicon Valley, USA last month, it will set up an office in South Korea later this month. SK Hynix is the sole investor in its initial capital of USD 55 million as of 2022.
It is reported that SK Group has been promoting various artificial intelligence businesses. Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, emphasized at the SK Icheon Forum last August that the group should use innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation to create social value, expand the market, and seek happiness for customers. And said, "If we can't use innovative technologies, we can't guarantee SK's future."
Gauss Labs is the first independent company specializing in artificial intelligence in the SK Group. Kim Young-han, a world-renowned data scientist, tenured professor at the University of California, San Diego, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) researcher, will be the CEO of Gauss Labs. Kim Young-han recently worked as a data researcher at SK Hynix. With his technical expertise and global network, he is considered the best candidate to lead the development of Gauss Labs.
In addition, Gauss Labs also appointed Dr. Yun Sung-hee from Amazon as the head of R&D. He is an artificial intelligence and optimization expert who has led many high-profile projects in semiconductor and e-commerce industries.
It is understood that the initial goal of Gauss Labs is to completely change the semiconductor manufacturing industry through innovative artificial intelligence technology, using the massive data generated by SK Hynix's production site. Through these technologies, SK Hynix plans to make its entire production operations, including process control, output prediction, equipment maintenance, defect detection and failure prevention, more efficient and intelligent.
SK Hynix said, "Gauss Labs is actively looking for the best talents in the field of artificial intelligence. We plan to recruit staff in the US headquarters and South Korea office. The goal is to increase the company's number of scientists and engineers to 200 by 2025."
