STMicroelectronics (ST; NYSE: STM), the world's leading semiconductor supplier spanning multiple electronic applications, announced the acquisition of the assets of SOMOS Semiconductor Corporation ("SOMOS") on October 16. SOMOS, headquartered in Marly-le-Roy, France, is a fabless semiconductor company founded in 2018, specializing in the development of silicon-based power amplifiers and radio frequency front-end modules (FEM) products.
Through this acquisition, STMicroelectronics can strengthen its professional and technical personnel, intellectual property (IP) and product roadmap related to the front-end modules of the Internet of Things and 5G networks. The first product, the NB-IoT / CAT-M1 module, has started certification testing and will be the initial product of the new network connection RF FEM development roadmap. In addition, SOMOS' technology and assets will also support product development in ST's current 5G infrastructure RF front-end module roadmap.
Claude Dardanne, President of STMicroelectronics Microcontrollers and Digital IC Division, said: "The consumer electronics and industrial markets look forward to more and better solutions for network connectivity. ST is committed to providing and enabling solutions to meet these needs and overcome Technical challenges. From this perspective, cellular IoT and 5G infrastructure technologies are crucial. Through this acquisition, our goal has become clearer, that is, to play an important role in the booming IoT connected RF FEM market. And strengthen our 5G RF front-end roadmap development capabilities. With the recent acquisition of UWB technology company BeSpoon and NB-IoT modem design company Riot Micro, ST can now rely on market-leading STM32 solutions and ecosystems to further provide its customers A fully functional network connection solution."
