On November 17, 2020, Nokia, Elisa, and Qualcomm Technologies announced today that the three parties have achieved the world's fastest 5G base station throughput of up to 8Gbps based on the Finnish commercial network, and for the first time to provide two 5G millimeter wave terminals with up to 8Gbps. Combine speed. The connection was shown at the Elisa flagship store in Helsinki, the Netherlands. The 5G millimeter wave high-speed connection will support a series of low-latency, high-bandwidth services, such as high-speed video downloads, mission-critical applications, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) application. 5G millimeter wave services are expected to be deployed in Finland in 2021.
This milestone 5G connection uses Nokia's 5G millimeter wave technology and 5G test terminals in the form of smartphones from Qualcomm Technologies, and is based on Elisa's commercial 5G network. The 5G millimeter wave high-speed connection supports more large bandwidth and delay-sensitive enterprise services, such as remote control terminals or critical business applications for industrial needs. The 5G millimeter wave solution will also allow users to enjoy an unparalleled VR/AR experience at concerts held in large venues, and download 4K videos or 3A-level games in a few seconds. 5G millimeter wave will also be used as an alternative to fiber broadband deployment to help increase the capacity of fixed wireless access connections. This will further assist Elisa's pioneering efforts to build a digital society in Finland as a global leader in 5G services.
The base station used for the 5G millimeter wave connection uses two Nokia AirScale wireless products, each based on the 800MHz bandwidth of the 26GHz commercial 5G millimeter wave band. Two 5G test terminals in the form of smartphones equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon™ X55 5G modem and radio frequency system (integrated with the second-generation Qualcomm QTM525 millimeter wave antenna module) are connected to the base station, providing each terminal with a peak speed of up to 4Gbps.
Sami Komulainen, Executive Vice President of Production at Elisa, said: "This connection marks a major progress in our dedication to provide customers with the fastest and best 5G experience. Elisa is the first operator in Finland and the first to deploy 5G in the world. The realization of up to 8Gbps connection speed is the inevitable result of our promotion of the development of 5G. We will continue to explore the infinite possibilities created by 5G and promote the development of 5G technology to benefit customers."
Tommi Uitto, President of Nokia Mobile Networks, said: "We are very pleased to work with our partners to achieve this important result, which will support us in providing an amazing 5G experience to Finnish consumers and businesses. This is another step in the development of 5G services. A milestone, showing the strength of Nokia's 5G commercial solutions."
Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Europe and President of Europe/Middle East and Africa, said: "We are very proud to work together to achieve this iconic result. This is an important milestone in the development of 5G millimeter wave. Qualcomm Technologies promotes the next generation of wireless connectivity technology. Our research and development work and our cooperation with Elisa and Nokia have made this milestone a commercial reality. The throughput achieved in this demonstration shows the true potential of millimeter wave deployment. We are very happy to continue to work with industry leaders to promote 5G millimeter wave Become a commercial reality."
