According to businesskorea reports, the industry expects that Apple will part ways with Intel and outsource the production of PC and notebook chips to Samsung Electronics.
On November 10th local time, Apple launched its first self-developed personal computer chip M1 and three new products equipped with M1. Initially, Apple outsourced the production of all M1 chips to TSMC. However, analysts said that Samsung Electronics also has a chance, because TSMC is unable to meet all the orders that Apple wants. Since Apple’s M1 chip is manufactured through a 5-nanometer process, TSMC and Samsung Electronics are the only two companies in the world that can produce the chip.
A researcher from NH Investment & Securities said: “Apple’s M1 chip orders account for about 25% of TSMC’s 5nm production capacity, but TSMC has used most of its 5nm production capacity for Apple’s A14 chips. Most orders that TSMC cannot satisfy, It is expected to flow to the foundry department of Samsung Electronics.
Although Apple’s iPhone chips were jointly produced by Samsung Electronics and TSMC in the past, Apple stopped outsourcing production to Samsung Electronics in 2015 and completely relied on TSMC. Some analysts said that TSMC’s foundry technology is superior to Samsung Electronics. Apple is also upset about handing over chip production to competitors in the smartphone market.
