Samsung Display said on Tuesday that the company will indefinitely extend its production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for TVs and monitors in South Korea due to rising demand due to home-based trends during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This decision replaces Samsung’s March plan to suspend production of LCD panels before the end of this year to focus on more advanced technologies.


Samsung Display said that the extended period will depend on market conditions. The company said at the end of October that it was considering a “short-term” extension of LCD production.

Local media earlier quoted South Korean technology industry sources as saying that at the request of Samsung Electronics' complete manufacturing department, LCD panel production may be extended by one year.

According to data from the technology research company TrendForce, due to the home trend triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, global LCD panel demand surged 30% from the previous quarter in the third quarter of this year.
