Recently, official documents from the State of Texas show that Samsung Electronics is considering Austin as the location of the company’s new wafer factory at a cost of $17 billion. Samsung said the new factory will create 1,800 jobs.
According to a Reuters report on February 5, this official document revealed that Samsung plans to build 7 million square feet (approximately 650,000 square meters) of new space on the 640 acres it already owns to manufacture what customers need. This means that the main production direction of the new factory is the smallest size and fastest calculation speed chip.
Apple and Qualcomm are one of Samsung’s main customers. TSMC announced last year that it would invest US$12 billion in a new wafer fab in Arizona. It is expected that the fab will achieve mass production in 2024.
The document revealed that Samsung's fab in Austin is preparing to break ground in the second quarter of this year and plans to start operations in the third quarter of 2023.
