A few days ago, the government of Karnataka in India has held talks with senior officials of Wistron and six human resources labor companies to try to get Apple to resume production at its factory near Koral.
In December last year, it was reported that a violent incident occurred during the night shift at a Wistron manufacturing plant in Narasapura, India, which was just put into operation. The reason was allegedly that Apple's assembly partner Wistron did not pay the workers the promised wages. After that incident, Wistron suspended the operation of the factory.
Gaurav Gupta, Chief Secretary of Industrial Affairs of the Karnataka Government, chaired this meeting to understand what obstacles Wistron and Human Resources companies face in restarting operations. The six HR labor companies participating in the meeting were Quess, Randstad, Adecco, Needs, Innov Source and Creative Engineers. Police officials also attended the meeting.
Gupta said: “Wistron has issues related to labor relations and industrial safety. We understand that the company has obtained the necessary regulatory permits from the government. We are ready to make every effort to allow them to resume operations as soon as possible.”
People familiar with the matter said that Wistron could restart its iPhone factory in India only after Apple approved it, that is, after Apple was convinced that the Taiwanese company had complied with its agreement.
Wistron executives requested an additional chief secretary to intervene in order to speed up the process of police verification of each contract employee. Wistron Group has resolved the issue of employee expenses and is strictly abiding by the re-employment regulations, allowing every employee to undergo a police background check.
At the meeting, Gupta said that Wistron can allow employees to apply for a background check on the government's Seva Sindhu portal and that the police will deal with it as soon as possible.
