Korean media: AMD may transfer GPU and APU production to Samsung

Feb 02 64
When global chip supply is in desperate situation, many companies have turned their attention to Samsung Electronics’ foundry business as TSMC’s production capacity cannot meet market demand. AMD is said to be in the same situation.

According to SamMobile, AMD is seeking to outsource its GPU and APU production to Samsung Electronics. At present, TSMC is responsible for all AMD's production orders, including Ryzen CPU/APU series, Radeon GPU, and game console and data center chips.

According to the report, AMD needs TSMC to set aside additional production capacity for it to prevent interruption of related chip supply. However, as TSMC’s largest customer, Apple undertook all the latter’s 5nm production capacity last summer. Therefore, TSMC’s 3nm process may also be mainly used for Apple’s chips, which will prompt AMD to re-select partners.

In addition, South Korean technology forum Clien.net stated that AMD hopes to expand its production capacity by 50% and is considering handing over some APU and GPU orders to Samsung foundry. The two companies are currently also cooperating, and both parties are developing a customized GPU for the upcoming Samsung Exynos processor.

However, this news has not been officially confirmed, but if it comes true, AMD will likely become the first company to use Samsung's 3nm process technology.
