A few days ago, China’s Taiwan region officially issued a water restriction order: Miaoli and Taichung will use a 5-day stop for 2-day water supply from April 6th, while the Science Park will use a 15% water-saving method. However, the Zhunan Science Park and Guangyuan Science Park in Miaoli will cooperate with the implementation of 5 stop 2.
In this regard, TSMC stated that the company has plans in place for each water restriction stage to cope with further water restriction policies by relevant units. Some plants will slightly increase the water volume of water vehicles to increase water flexibility, but it will not affect operations.
In addition, TSMC is also preparing to use groundwater to support production. Taiwan's Qinmei Group extracted groundwater from the Taichung construction project. The daily amount of groundwater reached 20,000 tons. In addition to providing general water, it also began to provide it to technology manufacturers such as TSMC free of charge. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. responded that it has sent water trucks to test the water and is currently conducting an understanding and evaluation of water intake and other related details.
In addition to TSMC, memory manufacturers Winbond and Micron also set up factories in China Science and Technology. Micron responded through a public relations company. It is currently in the quiet period before the financial report, and it is not convenient to comment on the water shortage issue.
Winbond said that it will continue to actively increase the process water recovery rate, reduce domestic water and landscape irrigation in the plant, and reduce the water demand of the whole plant. At the same time, it will complete the water truck transportation and replenishment plan. If there is demand, it will immediately dispatch water for water trucks. Production operations will not be affected.
The semiconductor silicon wafer fab Global Wafer has a plant in the Zhunan Science Park, and the foundry power Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has an 8-inch plant in the Zhunan Science Park.
Global Wafer pointed out that there are 60,000 tons of storage tanks in the Zhunan Science Park, and the park uses about 20,000 tons of water per day. Therefore, even if the Zhunan Park cooperates with the implementation of the 5 stop 2, the manufacturers in the area stop water supply for 2 days. During this period, it has not yet faced the dilemma of no water available.
Previously, TSMC had expected that the drought in Taiwan will not have any impact on production until June. It is expected that the water shortage will be relieved in the rainy season in May and the typhoon season in July and August.
Taiwan issued a water limit order for 5 stops and 2 TSMC: Will not affect production in the short term
