On May 5th, local time, GlobalFoundries announced the cooperation with quantum computing company PsiQuantum to build the world's first full-scale commercial quantum computer.
The two parties are currently manufacturing silicon photonics and electronic chips, which form the basis of the Q1 system. This is the first milestone in the PsiQuantum roadmap, aiming to provide commercial quantum with one million qubits (the basic unit of quantum information) and higher computer.
It is reported that the Q1 system is the result of PsiQuantum's five years of development by the world's top photon quantum computing experts. The mission of this team is to turn the world-changing quantum computing into reality, based on two basic understandings: 1) A useful quantum computer needs more than 1 million physical qubits to complete other impossible calculations; 2) Using more than 50 years of investment in the semiconductor industry and trillions of dollars is the only way to create a commercially viable quantum computer.
GlobalFoundries said it installed proprietary production and manufacturing equipment at GF’s two 300mm wafer fabs in northern New York to produce thousands of Q1 silicon photonic chips, and produced the most advanced at the Fab 1 plant in Dresden, Germany. Electronic control chip.
Quantum computing is expected to bring extraordinary progress in multiple industries such as pharmaceutical development, materials science, renewable energy, climate mitigation, and sustainable agriculture. PsiQuantum's Q1 system represents a breakthrough in silicon photonics and is the only way the company believes to build a universal quantum computer with over 1 million qubits and providing error correction and tolerance.
"In the past year, we have experienced a decade of technological change. Now, due to digital transformation and data explosion, we are facing the need for quantum computing to further accelerate the computing renaissance," GF Computing and Wired Infrastructure Senior Vice President And general manager Amir Faintuch said. "The partnership between PsiQuantum and GF is a powerful combination of PsiQuantum's photonic quantum computing expertise and GF's silicon photonics manufacturing capabilities, which will change the climate, energy, healthcare, materials science, and government industries and technology applications.
PsiQuantum is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and is developing a quantum computer that uses photons as qubits. Last year, Microsoft's M12 venture capital division and other well-known investment directions PsiQuantum bet 215 million US dollars.
